Last week I took Kyree for her 4-year-old check up. She did such an amazing job I was even surprised. She really enjoys the doctor's office though, which I guess is a good thing. She sat perfectly still and did exactly as the nurse and doctor asked. They were able to check her eyesight which they don't always do at 4 years old since it's normally hard to get cooperation. She passed that test with flying colors. She is, as usual, in the 25th percentile for height and the 50th percentile for weight. The Dr. figures she'll be short, 5'2 or 5'3, which is probably about right since that's what I am.
There were a couple things we've been concerned about. One is the severe headaches she's been having over the last several months. They were causing her to throw up and she couldn't stand sound or light or being touched. The doctor confirmed that they are childhood migraines and to start keeping track of them. I guess she gets that from her Opie as neither Doug nor I get migraines. He said as long as they respond to medicine and they don't increase in frequency it should be fine. Another concern has been her hearing. She says "What?" all the time and really does have a hard time hearing low voices or whispering. They tried to do a hearing test but it's very hard at this age and it didn't provide any usable results. The doctor wasn't too concerned though as she is developing normally and talks just fine so it may just be a phase or it could be that she's stuffy from the cold she's had. We'll keep an eye on it over the next few months and see if it improves.
At the end she got 4 shots! The good news is she's all set for Kindergarten so she won't need anymore for awhile. She sat perfectly still and didn't even cry. She even cooperated for the blood draw from her finger. She got lots of stickers and charmed the whole office.
For being so good, I promised her that we'd go to Walmart so she could pick out one toy. She ended up getting a movie, Monster's, Inc. On our way into Walmart she had another adventure. An elderly gentleman stopped us and told us he had something for her. I was a little nervous - it's a shame that's how we have to be in this day and age, but his car was right there at the front so we walked over. He went into his backseat and pulled out a porcelain doll and gave it to Kyree. I was stunned and Kyree was overjoyed. He said his wife collected dolls because she was one of 11 children and never had many dolls. Toward the end of her life, he said everytime they went out he had to buy her a doll. She had just passed away so he had all these dolls and was giving them away to little girls as he saw them. I thought it was such a sweet thing to do and was glad I didn't ignore him, as was my first thought when he spoke to us. She LOVES this doll. Though it's porcelain and she's already broken a finger and the head has fallen off. She had a GREAT day.
